Most of your dental health routine hopefully won’t involve emergency trips to the dentist. Regular hygienic practices such as brushing twice daily, flossing, and visiting your dentist in Victoria annually will help prevent the majority of dental problems. Sometimes, however, things happen that are out of your control. That’s why we at Sherwood Family Dental do everything we can to accommodate our patients who need an emergency trip to the dentist. If you find yourself in one of the following situations, call us at our Victoria clinic to get the care you need.
When to See an Emergency Dentist Here are just a few common reasons to seek treated by an emergency dentist in Victoria:
Lost filling or crown. Although not a serious emergency, a lost filling or crown can be painful and can leave the rest of your tooth at risk of more damage. If you can, bring the lost crown with you when you see the dentist in case it still fits and can be simply re-secured.
Tooth knocked out or chipped. While chipped teeth can be fixed fairly easily and usually aren’t serious, teeth that have been knocked out require fast reactions. Knocked out teeth can be replaced in your mouth but it has to happen quickly. Furthermore, when handling the loose tooth, never grip it by the root, but always by the crown. If possible, replace the tooth in its socket and hold it in place with gauze while on your way to the dentist.
Soft tissue injury. If you’ve been cut or otherwise hurt in the soft tissue of your mouth but not seriously enough to call the EMT, visit a dentist as quickly as possible. Be sure to wash out the injury with water and apply pressure to the wound with some clean gauze.
Infection. Infections can be painful if they’ve been developing for a while. They may also cause swelling and redness. If you think your mouth is infected, call your dentist right away.
Displaced tooth. When your tooth hasn’t been quite knocked out but simply moved from its correct position in your mouth, your dentist can put it back in its place if you act quickly. Displaced teeth can be painful and affect your bite so you shouldn’t waste time in getting them replaced by a dentist.
